Spanning an area of 1000 acres and containing over 300 million cubic feet of deposits, these quarries are both the oldest and largest in existence.
On April 17, 1929, the Cleveland Stone Company purchased the Ohio Quarries Company. The Cleveland firm then became known as the Cleveland Quarries Company and moved its headquarters to Amherst, Ohio. Euclid bluestone (the Euclid Member of the Upper De- vonian Bedford Formation) is a dense, well-indurated, very fine grained sandstone that crops out in northeastern Ohio in and near Cleveland. The unit was quarried early in the nineteenth century, even earlier than documented quarry- ing of the more famous bluestones of New York State.
For more than ninety years, this area was the heart and soul of Berea's sandstone quarries. In the early 1830s, John Baldwin discovered that the area's sandstone deposits made superb grindstones and building stones. In the 1840s, thriving sandstone quarries developed and became Berea's lifeblood.
